I'm going to be taking down the show today at Gallery Neptune and only now went to their website (click previous link) and saw their online display of it. Very nicely done.

In the end, three pieces sold. There was a fourth for awhile but the person backed out.

I've been meaning to pose this question after an incident at the opening--what is your reaction to Teatro del' Arabo? Does this piece strike you as racially stereotyping Arabs? Because a young man of arabic descent approached me at the opening, rather upset, and felt that it did. I was quite taken aback, as that had never been my intent in this piece. I've always felt this piece was a kind of somber meditation on the Arab world from an aesthetic point of view rather than a political one. I'd like other opinions.

Now it's on to Barrister's Gallery in New Orleans, which means a LOT of packaging and crate building for the shipment. The show will not only display the Theaters of the 13th Dimension, but also my current series of Black on Black drawings, and earlier pastels.

I have airline tickets to attend the opening on April 12th and barring another disaster, I hope to be there.

Circular Display

Came back from the AVAM where Joe has been laboriously attending to details on the new circular display. He got it wired. I screwed in the bulbs. We tested all the doors by hanging them (even though they still need black paint), put the lantern top on, got everything in place, and put a theater in one of the chambers, and turned it on--- oh my. I was pretty well blown away.

Tomorrow the doors get painted and the glass knobs (which came today) get put on, and then I think it might just be done. I can't wait to take a picture of it when it's finally complete.

Depending on timing, we'll either deliver it tomorrow or Wed. morning.

The best part of all this is when the show comes down, the display will become a permanent part of my house.

Lost souls

The theme for today is Lost Souls...which is what was running through my head this morning as I squired Parker around the block in the rain.

In Googling the subject, I learned there was a movie by that name, largely forgotten, with Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin.

Yes, I made a theater on this theme... I wish I could put it in the Neptune show. But it's one of my favorites and I can't risk selling it. So, online is as far as it will be seen, unless you want to show up on my doorstep and see it in person.

The theater isn't really what I was thinking about though-- it was the larger theme of lost souls, what it is to be lost, to feel lost, asea, empty, void, missing. To be at one with yourself but lost in the sea of humanity. To feel adrift, unconnected, alone. And yet to know, on some level, that there are millions of others out there just as lost as you. The most visible examples being the homeless. Each time I see a homeless person I'm sharply reminded of that.

And how we never really know another person. And how alone we all are.

New show at Gallery Neptune opens next Wed. Feb 6th

Getting into gear for the upcoming show at Gallery Neptune in Bethesda. Met with fabulist today to look at the new circular display for 12 theaters he's making, and to see what I could do to help.

These were the initial sketches for it. We've modified the top with an opening for heat escape, to look like below. And the display is mounted on a black metal pole prop. that adjusts it to an average eye level.

It's looking quite amazing and my head always starts spinning when Joe starts explaining all the details and features. He is truly a genius! Right now it's rough and dirty and needs to be cleaned up, vacuumed out and have finishing touches applied.

I'm doing the doors and will get them tomorrow. I just ordered these small glass knobs for the doors (to be placed in the center rather than near the open edge.) I'm getting them rushed and they should (better) be here Saturday.

I can't believe today is Thursday already. the week has flown by. I deliver the work on Sunday, but that will be just the wall display, with 18 theaters. I think we'll have the circular one done by Monday, Tues at the latest. Teh show officially opens Wednesday, but the reception is the following Sat. Feb. 9th.

I've emailed a bunch of people locally and so far everyone is busy and can't make it. Which is I guess what I expected. It's always a big effort and pain in the ass to go to an art show. I think people immediately get uncomfortable because they feel like they're under pressure to BUY something. If they only knew, my feelings on selling the stuff!!! Jeez, I'm not counting on selling anything. It would be just hunky dorey with me if I didn't--at all. It's just showing the stuff that I enjoy. Having people see it.

Anyway, there's more to do and I'm going to be rushed for the next week.

The largest exhibit of my miniature theaters (see http://teenytheaters.com) will be taking place at Gallery Neptune in Bethesda Md. Feb 6th- March 1 2008. Over 30 of my works, some that have never been shown before, will be on display in the gallery. The exhibit, which includes work by two other artists, is themed around small sized works of art.

In less than a month (EEK!!!!) I will be showing at
Gallery Neptune in Bethesda MD.

February 6th-March 1st
Reception is Feb. 9th, 7-9pm

People in the Baltimore, DC, No. VA area, this is your opportunity to see the teeny theaters in person. I'm not sure when there will be another opportunity as I am no longer producing them and have no further plans to show them.

I'm planning on filling the large lighted display case which holds 18 pieces, plus will have an additional round display that holds 12, and perhaps one or two individual displays. So this show will feature THIRTY or more of the theaters.

NEVER before have so many been shown at one time. So this really will be a spectacular opportunity. I urge you to attend if its possible. I will post a list of pieces in the show when I finalize it. For now, I know these two will be included:

That's how I feel about this body of work. I was all consumed and engaged for 6 years making it---and now, six months later, I'm a million miles away.

I'm involved now in a new series, a commercial project, and other things too top secret to reveal.
